On the Edge will be the meeting point of the European classical tradition represented by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra; the African classical tradition represented by Tunde Jegede; innovative club experimentation from Club 21st Century and young developing musicians, playing anything from ones & twos (DJ turntables) through rock guitars to trombones. They will collaborate through a series of local workshops and on-line interactivity to create new music that reflects all of the excitement of Britain's innovative contemporary music scene.
Beginning in March a series of workshops will take place in four areas of Hertfordshire, England, culminating in local performances and followed by a residency weekend in which the separate groups will join together to develop their work further. The final stage will be the presentation of music from the project and the world premier of a new orchestral piece inspired by the project in a concert by the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra in October. Until then workshop participants will be able to use this web site to continue their collaborations "on-line" by down-loading, re-mixing and discussing each other's work in the special Virtual Workshop area. The rest of us will be able to follow the progress of the project with music, images and video from the workshops and local performances. So bookmark this site and check in regularly. On the Edge was initiated by the Eastern Orchestral Board, the organisation which develops and supports work by professional orchestras throughout the East and East Midlands. This venture is the first in a string of orchestral projects featuring the EOB's Innovations Composer, Tunde Jegede, who was appointed to achieve collaborative music projects across the region during 1999 and 2000. |
